Dell

The latest update to Dell's XPS 13 line of products will be available starting Wednesday September 30th and will include 11th generation Intel CPUs, also known as Tiger Lake. We know a lot of AMD fans won't be disappointed with any Team Red option – we honestly are a little disappointed, too. We were very impressed with this year's AMD Renoir laptop CPUs.

As disappointed as AMD fans may be, Tiger Lake represents a pretty massive upgrade over last year's Ice Lake and Comet Lake franchises, as we saw right away when we had the chance to sell a Tiger Lake prototype earlier this month. Test laptop. The four-core / eight-thread i7-1185G7 that we've come to expect in the top-of-the-line XPS 13 models may not match an eight-core / sixteen-thread Ryzen 7 4800U – but it even hangs with an eight-core Ryzen 7 4700U / eight threads pretty good even with massive multithreaded workloads.

Not every workload is massively multithreaded now – and the Tiger Lake i7 we tested showed extremely fast single-thread performance. More importantly, the graphics built into Xe were by far the most powerful iGPU we've seen – they're not ready to replace a gamer's Nvidia RTX-series discrete GPU, but we suspect they'll be cheaper for Nvidia's MX Series Discrete Laptop GPUs were a death penalty.

While Dell didn't get it right, we expect the new XPS 13 models to qualify under Intel's Project Evo platform brand as well. This means extremely fast start and wake-up times, a very long battery life – which must be achieved under high-performance settings – and fast charging. Dell has specifically aimed for a runtime of 19 hours for the Dell XPS 13 and XPS 13 Two-in-One, a slightly more modest 18:40 for the Linux-based XPS 13 Developer Edition.

A closer look at the lineup

  • Left side – a Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C port, a microSD card slot.

  • The XPS 13 doesn't have a 180-degree hinge, but it comes pretty close. 160 degrees maybe?

One of the coolest things about the new XPS 13, in our opinion, is that it and the XPS 13 Developer Edition are no longer really separate pieces of hardware. With Dell, users can now install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on XPS 13 laptops that were not purchased as a Developer Edition without losing the factory warranty and support.

That being said, you're looking at a very sleek little laptop that uses a "quality over quantity" approach to ports. The only ports it offers are two Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C (one on each side), a 3.5mm laptop headphone / microphone combo jack, and a microSD card reader.

The good news is that both TB4 / USB-C ports support Power Delivery and DisplayPort. So you have options, but you need a dock to connect USB-A devices like mice, keyboards or standard USB sticks. (Dell includes a USB-C to USB-A dongle, but we suspect most people will need more options pretty quickly.)

  • The XPS 13 Two-in-One is a so-called "convertible" – it can be used either as a laptop or as a tablet, depending on what you are doing with its 360-degree hinge.

  • Here we see the two-in-one opened 180 degrees. But it can go further …

    Dell

  • In this so called "tent mode" you can use the two-in-one keyboard side effectively as a tablet stand.

    Dell

  • Rotate the two-in-one screen 360 degrees and it flips flat against the back of the keyboard so it can be used as a tablet (with or without the available stylus).

In addition to the standard XPS 13 and XPS 13 Developer Edition, there is an XPS 13 Two-in-One. If you are unfamiliar with this form factor, it is a "convertible" laptop. A 360 degree hinge allows you to fold the screen completely over. Then, you pretend the keyboard isn't there and interact only with the touchscreen.

The XPS 13 Two-in-One is just a convertible XPS 13 for the most part – but the larger size restrictions limit the CPU options a bit. The two-in-one model is rounded off with the i7-1165G7. Fortunately, the RAM can still go up to 32GB. However, like the standard XPS 13, you should order it the way you want it. The RAM is soldered to the circuit board and cannot be updated or replaced later.

Options and availability

The XPS 13, XPS 13 Developer & # 39; s Edition and XPS 13 Two-in-One will be available from September 30th with a platinum exterior / carbon interior. Both machines will later be available with Frost / Arctic White exterior cladding. Initially, all XPS 13 variants will use the Killer AX1650 Wi-Fi 6 chipset, which is based on Intel's AX200.

Some models will be available at a later date with the Killer Wi-Fi AX500-DBS, which is based on Qualcomm 6390 instead.
