kingdom

the-kingdom-lede-1300x731

Kingdom.

Netflix

Netflix's first Korean original series doesn't strike. Kingdom is a zombie horror with a political backdrop from the Joseon era that is set to expand. In Season 1, Crown Prince Lee Chang is embroiled in a political conspiracy while not investigating a mysterious plague. He's embroiled in a life or death thriller with a dash of royal dynasty at stake.

The end of the world

group-teotfw2nd-1-22-copy

Jessica Barden at World's End.

Netflix

If you like your dark British humor, The End of The F *** ing World is the place for you. Psychopath James (Alex Lawther) has a plan to kill Alyssa (Jessica Barden) while fleeing from her lousy parents. But when they fly across the open road and commit some violent crimes, their calloused hearts soften and they develop feelings for one another. Surprising, fast-paced and surreal, both seasons of this dead teenage show whose headphones are pumping the best sad doo-wop of the 50s, 60s and 70s will blow your mind.

crash

04askwatching-crashing-superjumbo

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (center) and the cast of Crashing.

Netflix

Before electrifying everyone with the word-for-word perfect Fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote a six-part comedy showcasing the early stages of her amazing talent. The crash follows twenty-six people who live in a disused hospital and casually follow the strict rules in exchange for cheap rent. The strange characters undermine expectations wherever it's weird, and Waller-Bridge appears as the ukulele-playing Lulu. Not only does she disrupt the setup of the friends, but she also gets into the occasional mind-boggling dark situation (see the all-too-sensitive Aunt Gladys).

Criminal

03465-criminal-uk-01-f35cjumhp

David Tennant in Criminal.

Netflix

Criminal brings you four series of police trials, each episode focusing on a suspect who has been dismantled in an interrogation room. The twist: each series takes place in a different country and language – Spanish, French, German, and English – but they use exactly the same concept and set. In addition to the strictly scripted cat-and-mouse interviews with master class performances by David Tennant and Hayley Atwell, it is fascinating to see how the limited sets are used differently by different police teams.

Mindhunter

mh-206-0071621r

Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter.

Netflix

David Fincher is directing a number of episodes in the two-season run of this psychological crime thriller (the third is set to indefinitely), so meticulous visuals and engaging storylines go without saying. Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) is an FBI special agent sent to interview serial killers in prison to profile what makes them tick. Cameron Britton as serial killer Ed Kemper is absolutely cool. Smarter and richer than your average crime series, Mindhunter kind of grows with its complex characters. It would be a shame if season three didn't happen.

The OA

oa-205-unit-00830r

Kingsley Ben-Adir and Britt Marling in the OA.

Netflix

From the minds of Britt Marling and Zal Batmanglij, The OA has it all: mystery, sci-fi, the supernatural and even a dash of fantasy for a good measure. We follow Prairie, a young woman who reappears after being missing for seven years. She was blind, but not anymore! Now called the OA, she brings a host of Midwestern locals of all ages and backgrounds on her dimension-hopping mission to save lives. Unfortunately, Netflix canceled The OA after Season 2, but this great, inventive, and human sci-fi is still worth a look.

Educational classes

otis-eric-1

Asa Butterfield and Ncuti Gatwa in sex education.

Netflix

Binging sex education is a breeze: the confident, John Hughes-obsessed mish-mash of American and British high school culture is a breeze. We follow Otis (Asa Butterfield), the son of a sex therapist (Gillian Anderson), as he begins his sexual awakening. The explicit sex talk and scenes are addressed in a refreshingly healthy and honest way. Netflix has understandably commissioned a third season.

The Haunted Hill House

hohh-106-unit-01039r

The crains.

Netflix

Loosely based on Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name, Mike Flanagan's The Haunting of Hill House weaves its horror into a profound story about a broken family. After growing up in a haunted house, the Crains cannot ignore their past and have to do what you never want to: go back down those dark corridors. The impressive set pieces will delight horror fans, but it's the sad story of the Crains that will haunt you for days. Good news: the second chapter of the anthology is coming this year.

dark

Dark-Season-3-Episode-1-1691818-00-12-59-21-779911

Martha Nielsen in the dark.

Netflix

Germany's answer to strange things consciously takes time before it moves to completely convincing and original places. A science fiction noir dark folds time travel, conspiracies, and estranged families into a cross-generational story triggered by the disappearance of a child. If you are looking for those kind of carefully crafted layers in your storytelling, this is what you should prepare for. All three seasons of Dark's meditative look at time travel and its effects on human nature are waiting to hit you with full force.

Black mirror

black-mirror-3.jpg

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis in San Junipero.

Laurie Sparham / Netflix

During Charlie Brooker's gritty tech anthology series can be hit and missedAt best, Black Mirror packs its mini-films with an exploration of futuristic technological ideas through painfully human stories. One of them is San Junipero, which follows two women in their 80s (cue banging soundtrack) who fall in love in ways they can't in their "real" life outside of the beach town. The technical aspect is revealed with ingenious timing, and in general the show explores the consequences of our connected life in disturbing and at times uplifting ways.

GLOW

glow-305-unit-00636r

Betty Gilpin and Alison Brie in GLOW.

Netflix

A show inspired by the true story of the first pro wrestling syndicate in the 80s? Actor Alison Brie? Produced by Jenji Kohan? Dreams do come true. GLOW's purely hilarious comedy, packed with eccentric female characters, combines campiness with outsider triumph and rises. Season 3 goes deeper into the life of its diverse ensemble. A fourth and final season is on the way to bring this adorable body slam into the ring.

The crown

thecrown-301-unit-00384-r

Olivia Colman in the crown.

Netflix

Magnificent is a word used to describe the production values of The Crown's drama about the British monarchy. After the life of Queen Elizabeth II, starting in her 20s with a powerful performance by Claire Foy, The Crown captures the great events of historical events deep within Buckingham Palace. Characters like Winston Churchill, Princess Margaret, Margaret Thatcher and others are treated with the utmost cinematic sophistication. A fourth, fifth and sixth season are well on their way to rounding off your knowledge of the Queen's reign well into the early 21st century.

Russian doll

1461494-1118763-zoomedr

Natasha Lyonne in the Russian doll.

Netflix

Russian Doll takes the Groundhog Day premise and tears it apart in unpredictable ways. Natasha Lyonne is the crackling spark at the center of her time loop mystery, playing Nadia, a game developer who dies repeatedly on the night of her 36th birthday party. The show, co-designed by Amy Poehler, uses time travel to explore self-reflection on a whole new level, making this a definite date for a session.

Incredible

incredible-101-unit-01125r

Kaitlyn Dever in Unbelievable.

Netflix

Based on a true story of rape, this miniseries skilfully navigates its disturbing and tricky subjects with the help of a remarkable feat by Kaitlyn Dever. She plays Marie, a teenage girl accused of lying about rape, but that's more complicated, of course. Toni Collette and Merritt Wever team up as whip-wise detectives who see what others can't, adding another layer to the delicate, powerful triumph of Unbelievable.

Master of nobody

exdstill-mon-204-205-160924-025915-r

Alessandra Mastronardi and Aziz Ansari in Master of None.

Netflix

On the surface, a comedy about a 30-year-old New Yorker who loves his pasta. Master of None casually casts nuanced and moving episodes about immigrant families and their second generation children. Then an entire episode about Tinder is erased. Dev's relatable experiences are oozing with the wit and charm of creator and star Aziz Ansari, and personal controversy aside, the romantic and cultural themes he explores are remarkably mature.

Unorthodox

uno-102-unit-00241

Shira Haas in unorthodox.

Netflix

This miniseries is based on a memoir and is told mainly in Yiddish with meticulous detail. Almost a thriller, Unorthodox follows 19-year-old Esty Shapiro, who escapes her arranged marriage in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn. She ends up in Berlin and explores a new life outside of the strict beliefs she grew up in, but her community doesn't let it go that easily. With a breathtaking performance by Shira Haas, you can take a step into an inexorably fascinating world with Unorthodox.

I have never

nhie-105-sg-00007r

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Jaren Lewison in Never Have I Ever.

Netflix

Devi is your average high schooler who just wants to be cool and make a friend. But it's hard to stay a chipper after your dad dies. Mindy Kaling's coming-of-age story covers familiar territory yet stands out from the crowd in several ways. Get this: Its narrator is John McEnroe. The athletic connection is just one layer of this surprising show that depicts an Indian family living in California. You've seen these stories before, but not with these unique characters.

Money robbery

lcdp-416-unit-00143

Alvaro Morte as a professor.

Netflix

This series is loved by many (and Netflix loves you for it), but in case you haven't heard what all the fuss is about, Money Heist is a heist. The mastermind doing Ocean & # 39; s eleven step prep with equally satisfying revelations is The Professor. He has his sights set on banks and we see his intricate plans come together with nifty flashbacks, time leaps, and even an unreliable narrator. This intrigues television with a distinct Spanish identity – don't let the subtitles put you off.

Dead to me

dtm -easergrab3-rc2d

Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate in Dead To Me.

Netflix

If you're looking for a female-led show with a dark sense of humor and mystery, Dead To Me delivers all of that in spades. This underrated series is about the friendship between Linda Cardellini's Judy and Christina Applegates Jen, total opposites that are connected through wine, family and murder. The twists and turns and revelations keep the momentum going while you enjoy spending time with these flawed but brilliant women.

Peaky Blinders

3171-pb4-31may17

Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders.

Netflix

Netflix carefully acquired the rights to Peaky Blinders, and there are five seasons with two more coming to tackle the breathtaking rise of Birmingham ganger leader Thomas Shelby in the 20th century. Prepare for a mesmerizing performance by Cillian Murphy in this family saga that has a fantastic amount of fun and flair, and shows Shelby's dealings with other gangs, the police, and the casual lover.

After the live

After-Life-Season-2-Ricky-Gervais-Penelope-Wilton-Netflix

Ricky Gervais and Penelope Wilton in After Life.

Netflix

After Life might not be a classic like Ricky Gervais & # 39; The Office and Extras, but it's a show you'll want to put up with. Set in the fictional sleepy town of Tambury, it follows newspaper journalist Tony, played by show artist Gervais in an impressively dramatic area. Tony mourns the love of his life from cancer. While the show is steeped in melancholy, there are magical moments when Tony induces priceless brutal defeats on the eccentric and annoying (to him) townspeople. But you always know that he is on the right track to face his grief and build nice relationships with the people around him.

Derry Girls

dg2-ep-1-retreat-8886

The cast of Derry Girls.

Netflix

Another unmissable show, Derry Girls, follows the breakdowns of Erin and her friends in Derry, Ireland in the 1990s. Her teenage woes are paired with antics of her equally funny parents against the backdrop of the Northern Ireland conflict. While you can make comparisons to The Inbetweeners, Derry Girls draws from his own well of sweet charm and the historical context paves the way for surprisingly dark humor.

The sinner

tv-tsi02-i5502-0832

Bill Pullman (left) plays Detective Ambrose in The Sinner.

Netflix

Three fascinating seasons of The Sinner are waiting to be cracked. Each season focuses on a murder committed by an unlikely culprit in even stranger circumstances. Season 1 follows Jessica Biel's Cora, who stabs a man to death in a sudden frenzy on the beach but has no idea why. It's up to Bill Pullman's Detective Ambrose to unravel the shockingly disruptive events in her psyche that cause it to be triggered.

Aka Grace

ag-ep01-d40-0177

Sarah Gadon (right) plays Grace in alias Grace.

Netflix

This miniseries is from a few years ago, but in case you missed it, it's definitely worth checking out. In the style of The Sinner, Alias Grace steps back into her young protagonist's past to find out why she is committing a murder she cannot remember. The adaptation of a novel by Margaret Atwood shows a hypnotic Sarah Gadon as the Irish immigrant Grace, who leads a turbulent life as a servant to a family in colonial Toronto. Based in part on a true story, this is not a straightforward puzzle with simple answers, and that makes it all the more fascinating.

Lovesickness

ap-love-sick-762

The cast of Lovesick.

Netflix

Lovesickness is a simple, entertaining consideration with a premise ripe for awkward humor that we can all relate to. Helplessly in love, Dylan discovers he has chlamydia and must track down past slings and let them know they may have it too. A flashback keeps things interesting, especially when the focus is on Dylan and Evie's feelings for each other. It never goes into soapy territory, with an eccentric but lovable supporting cast playing English roommates in a Glasgow setting.

Bodyguard

1-v2

Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes in the bodyguard.

Netflix

Bodyguard broke records when it first aired in the UK, climbing from cliffhanger to cliffhanger at a relentless pace. This could be the definition of unstoppable binge, which is not surprising given that it comes from the mind of Jed Mercurio of Line of Duty. Richard Madden of Game of Thrones plays the eponymous bodyguard who suffers from PTSD after serving in the Afghanistan war. He is also charged with protecting the Home Secretary (Keeley Hawes), whose policies he despises. Bodyguard takes provocative turns and creates one of the best 20-minute opening scenes of all time.

Strange things

a34-promo-stills-022519-0043-r

The cast of Stranger Things.

Netflix

It wouldn't be a best list without Stranger Things. If you've somehow missed the Duffer Brothers ode to 80s horror and Steven Spielberg, things are going to get tubular. We follow El, an almost mute girl who was the subject of scientific experiments. She develops telekinetic powers that she uses to ward off monsters that invade from a terrifying alternate dimension. The world of Indiana, Hawkins, is lovingly detailed for anyone in need of a nostalgic '80s hit, and the Misfit characters, played by a stellar young cast, are part of everything that makes this show a tour de Force does.

House of cards

hoc-601-unit-00161r

Robin Wright in the house of cards.

Netflix

While Kevin Spacey's sexual harassment allegations ultimately resulted in this chic slice of dark side politics being damaged on the fourth wall, it's still worth checking out if you're into power games and the occasional backstabbing. After Spacey's Frank Underwood, House of Cards follows his wife Claire (Robin Wright) in the sixth and final season, who takes on more and more power in the Oval Office.

Ozark

ozark-303-unit-01409rc2-fnl

Jason Bateman and Laura Linney in Ozark.

Netflix

Dubbed the next breaking bad, Ozark just keeps getting better as you watch the Byrde family's life spiral out of control. Ozark starts with a bang and sees financial advisor Marty (Jason Bateman) money laundering system go awry for a Mexican drug cartel. His solution? Take his family to the Lake of the Ozarks where he will set up a major laundry. Ozark builds on all of this potential and creates a clever, but most importantly, entertaining story with an outstanding performance from Laura Linney as Wendy Byrde. Great news: Ozark has just been renewed for a fourth and final season.

traveler

travelers-ep303-lh-0261

The occupation of travelers.

Netflix

Full Disclosure: Netflix sadly canceled Travelers after its third season, but this tightly-planned sci-fi from Canada ends on an ambitious bang. We start with Marcy, a disabled woman who was beaten up after helping a friend escape thugs. She dies – then she comes back to life. This powerful, character-based science fiction cleverly reveals its secrets, following agents from the future who are tasked with preventing the collapse of society but also traveling the difficult territory of a double life.

love

love-304-unit-01277-r1

Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust in love.

Netflix

You play Mickey and Gus, a couple who are attracted to opposites and go to messy, frustrating, and lovable down-to-earth places that make this an honest look at a relationship that is built over time. Iris Apatow is a standout figure as the unfortunate tutor for child actress Gus, who gets away with almost anything.

Orange is the new black

oitnb-713-unit-02449-rc

Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon in orange is the new black.

Netflix

One of the first Netflix originals laid the foundation in several ways. Originally taken from a treatise on a real women's prison, the seven seasons encompass the lives of women of different backgrounds and nationalities, all of whom end in orange overalls. Drug money smuggler Piper kicks off season one when our Alice walks down the rabbit hole in this wild, raw, hilarious and powerful show, picking up on difficult topics that aren't often explored on screen.

When they see us

wtsu-102-unit-00544r

Asante Blackk will come in when they see us.

Netflix

Ava DuVernay's When They See Us falls under the tough but indispensable banner. It depicts the real-life events of the 1989 Central Park Jogger Case, which involved five male color suspects falsely accused of rape and assault. When they see us, not only is the humanity of the boys brought into focus, but they also call for outrage at the injustice of systemic racism.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

uks-401-unit-00850r

Ellie Kemper in Kimmy Schmidt.

Netflix

Tina Fey's post-30 rock sitcom is as weird and wonderful as it gets. Kimmy Schmidt is 29 years old and finally appears after 15 years in the bunker of a doomsday cult. Naive but relentlessly enthusiastic, she does her best to adjust to New York life, take on odd jobs, find love, and make friends with equally strange people. The show is impressively peppered with one joke per second. His reps go through the roof and Ellie Kemper makes sure Kimmy is a heroine to put down roots for.

Daredevil

426c-Ringside-Unit-306-01761r

Charlie Cox in Daredevil.

Netflix

The show, which paved the way for Marvel's Netflix TV series, ended after its third season, a victim in the Cutting ties between the streamer and the superhero juggernaut. This understandably outraged fans, as its quality did not deteriorate. Daredevil is not just any superhero show, but goes to dark and surprisingly existential places and explores Matt Murdock's beliefs as he leads a double life as a blind lawyer and vigilante for Daredevil. Daredevil became famous for his hand-to-hand combat sequences, in which a villain was every bit as good as his hero – Vincent D & # 39; Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin -.

Jessica Jones

272-violet-310-unit-01446r

Krysten Ritter in Jessica Jones.

Netflix

While the final two seasons let the ball drop a bit when it came to complex issues, the first season of Jessica Jones is a force to be reckoned with. Somehow, the series manages to become a superhero detective noir, and themes such as rape, assault and PTSD are drawn into its many facets. Krysten Ritter was the perfect choice to take on the dry, sarcastic hero who could also be an asshole on occasion. With a mind-dominating villain like David Tennants Kilgrave who can literally tell people to kill themselves, the wall our hero must climb to save the day is absolutely breathtaking.

Chef & # 39; s Table

chef-brock-sg-00054r

Chef & # 39; s Table tells stories from professional chefs from around the world.

Netflix

This series is a moving, cinematic opera powered by the power of food, culture and inspiring stories.

Queer Eye

qeye-510-unit-01886r

The Queer Eye Team.

Netflix

As you watch, learn cooking, fashion, and home decorating skills on your own for confidence and happiness.

safety

col-sm-ep4-060617-238a3324

Carey Mulligan in collateral.

Netflix

A stroke of genius, Carey Mulligan, who plays a detective inspector, conducts an investigation into the murder of a pizza delivery boy who was shot dead in a London suburb. Mulligan's astute and, um, former Olympic pole vaulter Kip Gillespie delves deeper into the mystery, which, of course, is not what it seems. Collateral is pushing against the procedural limits of the police into a murky moral area wrapped in a hot blanket of politics and social commentary.

Narcos

narcos-301-unit-00124r

Pedro Pascal in Narcos.

Netflix

The drug king Pablo Escobar is the subject of this addicting series that accelerates his rise to the notorious cocaine trafficker and billionaire. Narcos is a lifelike report that blends in with archival material and manages to present Escobar with a sympathetic side without undermining the gravity of his material. Also, the DEA's hunt to bring Escobar down has added to the tension. After completing the three series, head to Narcos: Mexico, a companion series that focuses on the illegal drug trafficking in Mexico.

The last Dance

mj-pic7011m copy

The final dance follows the rise of the Chicago Bulls.

Netflix

Even if you're not into sports or documentaries, The Last Dance plays out like the most vibrant drama detailing the rise of the Chicago Bulls with rare footage of their magnetic and intense leader Michael Jordan. The Last Dance is a fascinating look into the world of basketball and is as entertaining and exciting as a match on the court.

13 reasons why

13rw-410-unit-00833r

Dylan Minnette in 13 reasons why.

Netflix

The first season of this YA show was most closely related to the source material, a Jay Asher novel that revolves around a girl's suicide. Hannah Baker leaves a box of tapes that her thoughtful friend Clay Jensen hears to find out why she took her own life. This is deep stuff that is treated in a confrontational way (viewed as too confrontational at one time), but the social problems like suicide, sexual assault, and mental health are ripely dealt with. A high school drama by fragile, lost young adults attracts you and won't let you go.

BoJack rider

bojack-horseman-s06e01-12m1s17305f

Will Arnett approaches BoJack.

Netflix

When it comes to cartoons lowering your guard before getting punched in the stomach with mental health considerations, BoJack Horseman takes the cake. Set in an LA full of anthropomorphic animals, it follows a slurred ex-sitcom star who tries to return to his former celebrity with an autobiography. While it may take you some time to digest this unconventional cocktail at first, BoJack Horseman will soon surprise you with his truths about battling depression and addiction on the way to get your life going again.

The Kominsky method

kominsky-206-unit-02300r

Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas in the Komisnky Method.

Netflix

A comedy with Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin? Yes, it's as good as it sounds. Douglas plays Sandy Kominsky, an ex-actor in Hollywood who is now an acting coach and goes through everything that comes with getting older. Arkin plays his buddy and agent Norman Newlander. The two main roles, along with supporting characters like Emily Osment, make this show a poignant, warm-hearted area.

Godless

818-161005-jm-a-06-038r

Merritt Weaver und Michelle Dockery in Godless.

Netflix
