Both Apple's AirPods and AirPods Pro haven't been updated in more than a year. On the other hand, these are headphones that may not necessarily need to be updated annually. However, if you think that both the AirPods and AirPods Pro could be improved, 2021 could be the year you should be on the lookout for the update.
This comes from a report by Bloomberg that claims that Apple could actually unveil a revamped version of the AirPods and AirPods Pro in 2021. Both new models are said to have a brand new design as well as improved wireless chips. While not mentioning it, it is possible that Apple will introduce the U1 chip for better location tracking in case you misplace one of the earbuds.
As for the new design, the report claims that Apple will actually drop the stem for the AirPods Pro. Many mocked the AirPods' original design as they looked essentially like the EarPods with the wires cut off. The new design is supposed to resemble more of a bud-like design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus or even Google's Pixel Buds, but that's not necessarily set in stone as squeezing the components together into such a small design has proven challenging.
This suggests that Apple may not have fully determined its final shape yet. Definitely take it with a grain of salt, but if you're looking for an upgrade, it might be better to hold out until next year.
