A new entry in SNK's legendary Metal Slug franchise is under development, in the hands of the studio behind Call of Duty: Mobile, Arena of Valor and the recently announced Pokémon Unite.

The new Metal Slug game has no title yet, but is currently known as the Metal Slug Code: J.

The mobile game trailer features Metal Slug’s hallmark of the side-scrolling shoot-up campaign, but with notable changes that include updated graphics, a new ice thrower, and on-screen controls. A hometown with shops and NPCs is also presented.

SNK will partner with Tencent Games subsidiary TiMi Studios for the Metal Slug mobile game to keep the franchise going more than two decades after it was launched in arcades in 1996.

"Metal Slug has an unbelievable story with great action and great gameplay. We are proud to make it accessible to mobile players around the world," said Yasuyuki Oda, producer of SNK games, in a statement.

"Our team focused on a faithful replica of the game's classic shoot-em-up style, which is easily accessible to gamers and fun for new and existing fans of the genre," added Winco Qin, general manager of TiMi J1 .

The trailer and press release for Metal Slug Code: J contain important details such as the expected release date of the mobile game and the question of whether it is a free-to-play title or not. Digital Trends has turned to Tencent Games and we will update this article as soon as we hear anything.
