Smart display assistants have pushed the limits further than "loudspeaker assistants" and are ideal for the living room, office or kitchen. However, the bedroom is the next frontier, and this is where smart watches seem to be the most convenient form that smart assistants can take.

With a price of $ 79, the Lenovo Smart Clock starts with a significant price advantage over the similarly sized Echo Spot ($ 129). The Lenovo Smart Clock is part of the Google Assistant Echo system, which competes with Amazon's Alexa Assistant.

We assume in this test You like the idea If you have an intelligent assistant in your bedroom, we know that this is currently a niche market, but many power users enjoy the use cases described below.

Smart watch design

When it comes to size, the design and size of the Lenovo Smart Clock fit exactly in this category. It is smaller than many alarm clocks in hotels and has physical volume buttons on the top. The surface is covered with a soft mesh that is very similar to what Google uses for its speakers or Pixel 3 phone cases.

Surprisingly, there is a power connector on the back that is not a USB base. Next to it is a physical microphone switch that you can use to turn off audio when you don't need it. Finally, there is a full-size USB-A port that can be used to charge a smartphone or connect a wireless charger.

Lenovo is likely to use a round power connector, since a single USB-C connector for the watch and charging a phone may be more expensive, although the USB-C power supply should technically do the job.

There are two small microphone holes directly above the display, and according to Lenovo, far-field microphone technology works within a radius of 8 meters. Lenovo has not included a camera in this alarm clock.

The screen itself only shows the time in standby mode and possibly the current weather, depending on which watch design you have selected. There are a dozen to choose from and we can only hope that more will come.

"SURPRISINGLY GOOD AUDIO QUALITY"

The dial has important options, e.g. B. switching off with the lights off (it helps you sleep) or brightening, depending on the location (desk or bed) and needs.

The Audio quality of the 6W speaker is surprisingly good for a device of this type and size. It is definitely more powerful than what is needed to wake you up, and it is actually quite pleasant to listen to music in your room.

Alarms and voice assistant

The Lenovo Smart Clock is a great alarm clock, and that's no surprise at all since the user experience with normal alarm clocks is usually terrible.

It is also easy to set up multiple alarms or recurring alarms. There is also a "Sunrise Alarm" mode, in which the Smart Clock makes the display brighter ~ 30 minutes before the alarm is triggered. This is one way to mitigate your waking up for a more restful sleep cycle.

"RELEASE YOURSELF FOR A QUIET SLEEP CYCLE"

If the alarm goes off, you can Slumber it by tapping the top the Smart Clock, which will doze the buzzer for the next 10 minutes. You can stop it on the touchscreen or with a voice command like "Hey Google, Stop Alarm".

The Lenovo Smart Clock is a superset of the features that voice assistants offer, such as: B. Web search, weather, home control, and many things voice assistants do. Lenovo even sells Lenovo SmartHome Essentials so you can turn your home into a smart home.

If your home is equipped with smart cameras or doorbellYou may be able to check them using the smart clock. However, this depends on the actual brand and app version of your security system. Therefore we have not tested this. The only confirmed compatibility we've found is that of Google's Nest system.

Despite a screen, the Lenovo Smart Alarm differs from other display assistants. It is unable to play videos on the 4-inch screen, and some apps differ optically to accommodate the smaller screen size.

The changes to the user interface make sense, since some of the fine details are illegible (too small) and it is primarily an alarm clock.

If you use it on a desk and want to watch videos, consider a more expensive option from Amazon, or simply transfer the video to a nearby Chromecast-compatible display or smart TV. This option is built into the Lenovo Smart Clock device and it is also possible to transfer audio-only content to a connected speaker.

Conclusion

The Lenovo Smart Clock does an excellent job thanks to its elegant design, which offers everything you could want from an alarm clock. With the physical privacy screen and the USB charging port, it is an excellent device on the bed.

At $ 79, this is excellent value for money because the Amazon Echo Show 5 competition costs over $ 89 and the Amazon Echo Spot costs $ 129.

It's true that Amazon products have a camera, but we don't believe that small screens (5.5 inches and under) offer a great video call or movie experience when sitting on a bedside table. In general, video calls look much better on a larger screen like the Lenovo Smart Display and products with 8-10 inch displays.

Overall product rating: 9.1 / 10
