Arkane Studios is delaying Deathloop, the next game from the developers of Prey and Dishonored, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The company tweeted that the pandemic has severely disrupted the workflow required to complete the game on time.
"We made the decision to move the start date of Deathloop to the second quarter of 2021," said Arkane. "Our goal for Deathloop is to deliver a signature arcane game that will take you to locations never seen before in a stylish new world."
Announced at E3 2019, Deathloop follows the protagonist Colt, who tries to solve a time-loop puzzle and use his supernatural abilities to kill the eight villains responsible. He also competes against a rival assassin named Julianna, who can be played by someone else in online mode. Deathloop was originally slated for release in the fourth quarter of this year.
Arkane said the "health and safety" of all employees in the company is a top priority.
"As we got used to working from home we found that it took longer to deliver this new and exciting experience at the Polish and level that defines both an arcane game and a real next-generation experience than normal, "said Arkane. "This extra time allows our team to bring the world of Deathloop to life with as much character and fun as you would expect our team to do."
The game should be a timed console exclusive to both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
"While we know that this is the right decision for Deathloop, we share your disappointment and apologize for the longer wait," said Arkane. “Thank you for your support and excitement. Your positive feedback has helped us as we continue to work from home. We can't wait to share more details about Deathloop with you. So keep your eyes peeled for our next update which will be available soon. "
Deathloop is the latest in a series of games that have been delayed due to the ongoing pandemic. Halo Infinite, which was supposed to be a launch title for Xbox Series X, has also been delayed. The Last of Us II was postponed a few months before its June 19th release, and Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed several times.
