We'd heard of Apple's plans earlier that their devices could eventually act as digital car keys to unlock car doors and so on. If you think this is a fantastic idea, you'll be pleased to know that Apple has since released the latest update to its watchOS platform. With the update to watchOS 6.2.8 you can now use the wearable as a digital car key.
Before you get too excited, of course, there are a few factors to consider. One of them is that not all cars are compatible yet. Currently, only the BMW 5 Series 2021 will support Apple's digital car key function. This only applies to the Apple Watch Series 5, but broader support is expected in the future.
All users have to do is go to their car and tap on it with their Apple Watch to unlock the door. Note that this also works with the iPhone, where iPhones can be used in a similar way in iOS 13.6. It can also be used to start the car's engine, placing the iPhone on a charging pad to get the engine running.
This is useful if you prefer not to have a keychain with you on the go. It also extends Apple's plans for the Apple Wallet, which already houses digital credit and debit cards. We have seen patents in the past where Apple is playing with the idea that one day our iPhones could also hold passports and driver's licenses, but it is unclear when this could happen.
