Given that Google owns its own music streaming service and views Apple as a rival, it's actually interesting to see how the Google Assistant-powered smart speakers from Google, along with their Apple Music smart displays, are now directly from them can stream. This is evident from a recent update on the Google blog.
According to Google, “Get ready for a traffic jam: you can now ask the Google Assistant in Google Nest and other assistant-enabled smart speakers and displays to play whatever music you love on Apple Music. Starting today, Apple Music is rolling out on Google Assistant-enabled devices like Nest Audio, Nest Hub Max, Nest Mini, and more. Apple Music subscribers can search and play songs (70 million+!), Albums, and playlists – all ad-free – with just their voice. "
To be fair, it makes sense that Google would like users to be able to stream all types of music through their speakers, as that would encourage adoption of their hardware. In some ways, this also makes Apple look bad, as the company's HomePod and HomePod mini speakers are still quite limited compared to the competition.
Support for Apple Music is rolling out in markets such as the UK, UK, France, Germany, and Japan, with additional markets expected in the future.
