Netflix is launching a new "marketing drive" that will allow anyone to stream a handful of the platform's original shows and movies without a subscription. While access to shows like Stranger Things and When They See Us is limited to the first episode, viewers can watch full-length movies like The Two Popes and Murder Mystery for free.

The new offering (via Gadgets360) can be accessed through a dedicated area on the Netflix website. You can play any free content on your phone or in your computer's browser. Unfortunately, Netflix did not make this official help page available for iOS devices. No need to sign up for an account and the show or movie will start playing once you hit the “Watch Now” button.

Aside from Love is Blind, which was released earlier this year, the rest of the free catalog is at least a year old and it is unclear if Netflix plans to add any of its newest content. Netflix informs me that this marketing campaign is offering the same shows and films worldwide and is not intended for a specific region.

"We're looking at various marketing campaigns to attract new members and give them a great Netflix experience," a Netflix spokesman said in a statement to Digital Trends.

Although more people are streaming online content than ever before in a pandemic, Netflix subscribers continue to climb, but competition remains fierce. Over the past year, streaming has become increasingly competitive as more entertainment houses like Disney and NBC lock their productions behind their own exclusive platforms.

This is the latest on Netflix's long list of experiments to ensure that no stone is left untried to counter the growing competition especially in emerging markets like India. However, unlike usually, the free catalog is available worldwide.

In addition, Netflix has historically offered the first episodes of local shows in countries like India and Latin America. In India, where nearly three-quarters of all internet users surf the internet from their cell phones, the streaming service is also testing mobile-only plans that start at $ 3. It's also about cheaper annual packages.
